25 YEARS OF SUMMER UNIVERSITY:
BUDDHIST TREASURES OF KNOWLEDGE

Since Dhagpo’s beginning, we have cultivated the aspect of study in one form or another. It was one of the 16th Karmapa’s wishes to see the study of texts flourish among the practitioners in his centers. We know; in our lineage, listening and reflection are always in service of practice, be it that of meditation or daily activity. This wish has become Dhagpo Kagyu Ling’s Institute. Dhagpo’s summer university, which began in July 1992, was definitely one of the causes for this. The number of texts participants have studied systematically, the different aspects of philosophy they have delved into (the middle way, the theory of knowledge, Buddha nature, etc.), and the various teachers that have transmitted this knowledge with Khenpo Rinpoche as guide, all of this makes up the foundation of the Institute and will continue to do so in the future. 2017 marks twenty-five years of summer university.

Khenpo, citing the Buddha, tells us again, « It is not Buddha nature which needs to be developed, since it is there from the beginning, it is our discerning wisdom which needs to be cultivated. »

TRANSMITTING AND RECEIVING TO SHARE

Dhagpo’s Institute continues to express its value. One aspect of its wealth lies in the curriculum designed for volunteers actively invested in the Buddhist path. For several years now, Dhagpo offers specific study courses to allow them to integrate the Dharma based on traditional texts. These students apply and delve into the teachings they receive so that this heritage permeates them until it becomes their own. As of December 2016, they share their knowledge during Lama Jigme Rinpoche’s courses, in this way taking part in the preservation of this legacy of wisdom and the sharing of its knowledge.

WHEN GENERATIONS MEET:
YOUNG ADULT FORUMS AND COURSES

The Institute’s forums are spaces for dialogue that allow individual to exchange about their understanding and experience and to introduce a Buddhist perspective. Over a weekend in April 2017, youths ages eighteen to twenty-five discovered the Buddha’s teaching through numerous exchanges and tried meditation for the first time. In August, the forum explored the theme of listening, the glue of togetherness and stability. Sessions of testimonial and discussion alternated with workshops to spur interaction.

POWA RETREAT: SIMPLICITY AND SOUNDNESS

Lama Nyigyam spent numerous years in retreat, among them ten years at the retreat center of Sharminub in Nepal. For one week in the summer of 2016, he transmitted the instructions for a complex practice in a simple and accessible way. Which practice? Powa, or the transfer of consciousness. In the simplest way, he serenely guided the roughly 170 people present, naturally creating an atmosphere for meditation. Each participant was able to take his or her first steps in this meditative practice at their own rhythm.
